Today, Friday, the European Football Association (UEFA) officially announced the candidates for the award for the best player in the old continent (UEFA Best Player in Europe).
Real Madrid captain Karim Benzema will compete with goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois for the award, along with Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne.
The winner will be announced at the Champions League draw ceremony on the 25th of August.
The ranking of the rest of the players, starting from the fourth to the fifteenth, is as follows:
4- Robert Lewandowski (formerly Bayern Munich and now Barcelona) 54 points
5- Luka Modric (Real Madrid) 52 points
6-4 Sadio Mane (formerly Liverpool and now Bayern Munich) 51 points
7- Mohamed Salah (Liverpool) 46 points
8- Kylian Mbappe (Paris Saint-Germain) 25 points
9- Vinicius Junior (Real Madrid) 21 points
10- Virgil van Dijk (Liverpool) 19 points
11- Bernardo Silva (Manchester City) 7 points
12- Filip Kostic (Eintracht Frankfurt) 7 points
13- Lorenzo Pellegrini (Roma) 5 points
14- Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool) 2 points
15- Fabinho (Liverpool) 1 point
Last year, Chelsea midfielder Jorginho won the award.
Players are selected by the clubs participating in the group stage of the Champions League, European League and Conference League for the 2021-2022 season.
This is in addition to a group of journalists selected by UEFA.
The first choice gets five points, the second gets three points, and the third gets one point.
As for the coaches, Real Madrid's Carlo Ancelotti will compete with Pep Guardiola from Manchester City and Jurgen Klopp from Liverpool for the best prize.
None of the trio has previously won the updated award that began in the 2019-20 season.
While Klopp may be optimistic about winning it after being crowned by two coaches from Germany in the past two years, Hans Flick with Bayern and Thomas Tuchel with Chelsea.
But it is noticeable that all coaches who won the award won the Champions League, which may make Ancelotti's chances better after winning the championship last season at the expense of Klopp himself.
Klopp was third in the race in the 2019-2020 season, while Guardiola came in the same position in the following season.
Ancelotti never made it to the final list of 10 coaches.
